About the Artist

Lauren Waters
Born and raised in Ontario, I studied Fine Arts at McMaster University for one year. Then the mountains pulled me west and I spent most of my time outdoors, skiing, hiking, biking and paddling. After studying forestry at the University of British Columbia, I worked as a professional forester for over 20 years in BC. I later went back to school to learn fine woodworking design at Selkirk College (Nelson, BC) and started creating unique fine furniture and marquetry.
When my partner and I moved north to the Yukon in 2007, this sparked a return to expressing my creativity through watercolours. I love spending time outdoors doing spontaneous, quick watercolour sketches to capture the essence of the subject. I enjoy exploring my connection to the wilderness and my own spirituality through painting. I like watercolours because they are portable, fresh, light and often unpredictable. I study the natural world and interpret it using stylized or abstract techniques.
Although I have used watercolours most of my life, I had not taken any specific training until recently. Now I am energized by learning new techniques and exploring different subject matter. Some of my inspiration comes from my teachers over the past few years: Sterling Edwards, Jean Haines and Sarah Yeoman.
